Earth and Moon on your desk

Turn LEGO Technic 42179 into an investigation of orbits, lunar phases and the limits of a mechanical model.

Science activities

One turn sets several motions going. The Moon travels around Earth while the assembly moves around the Sun. Following a single sphere seems simple until you try to explain what it is doing relative to the others.

LEGO Technic Planet Earth and Moon in Orbit 42179 (affiliate link) is a 526-piece mechanical model. It is an earlier release rather than a new set for this year. Its appeal is making a spatial relationship something you can stop, inspect and discuss.

Choose your reference point

In the video, first follow the Moon relative to Earth. Then describe the same motion using the Sun as your reference. Changing your reference changes the description, even though the construction itself has not changed.

Before turning the crank, sketch three positions: the Moon, Earth and the direction of the Sun. Move slowly and sketch them again. You do not need to calculate speeds to discover that “one revolution” needs a specified reference.

The printed months and lunar phases provide orientation. Treat them as prompts for questions rather than assuming every marking is a precise astronomical measurement. Try predicting which relationship will repeat first, then observe what the mechanism actually does.

The spheres leave things out

The bodies and distances are not represented at true scale. Arms and gears support and coordinate the motion; planets have no equivalent structure pushing them around in space. The model uses a mechanism to illustrate geometric relationships.

Lunar phases depend on how much of the Moon’s illuminated half we see from Earth. They are not Earth’s shadow sweeping across the Moon every month. A separate lamp-and-ball activity can make that distinction clearer: keep your viewing position fixed and never look directly into a bright light. Compare your observations with positions on the model.

A build worth revisiting

Before looking for set 42179 on Amazon (affiliate link) , decide whether you want a one-time build or an accessible object for further investigation. Leave room to operate the crank and observe it from different sides. With a used set, check the parts and instructions: a missing gear matters more than a cosmetic mark.

For a different representation, try our Cosmic Simulator . Comparing the two is a useful way to ask which assumptions each model makes about space.
